BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Sport (single award – equivalent to 1 A-Level)
Course: BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport

Entry Requirements: A*- C in GCSE English, Science, and PE (PE is preferable but not essential).
Course Description: Equivalent in size to one A Level and is a two year course. This is an applied general qualification for post 16 students who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment in the sport sector. The qualification comes with UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers.
Learners study 4 units in total. The three compulsory units are:
Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology (33% of final grade). Externally assessed: 1.5 hour exam.
Learners explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy system.
Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being (33% of final grade). Externally assessed through a 2 hour controlled assessment, given 2 weeks before to carry out research.
Learners explore client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming to support improvements in a client’s health and well-being.
Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry (17% of final grade). Internally assessed.
Learners explore the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities.
The final unit is worth 17% of the overall grade, it is internally assessed, and will be one from the following units:
Sports Leadership: Learners study what makes a good leader, the different capacities of this role and the leadership skills and techniques necessary with leading activities in different roles
Application of Fitness Testing: Learners gain an understanding of the requirements of fitness testing and learn how to safely conduct a range of fitness tests for different components of fitness.
Practical Sports Performance: Learners study the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of selected sports through active participation in individual/team sports.
